Last spring, my golden retriever, Daisy, started scratching like crazy.
At first, I thought it was the usual—fleas, dry skin, maybe even an allergy?
I tried oatmeal shampoos, expensive vet-prescribed creams & medications, grain-free kibble… nothing worked.
It wasn’t just annoying—it was heartbreaking.
Daisy’s once shiny coat dulled, bald patches started forming, and the joy in her eyes dimmed. She stopped wanting to cuddle. She stopped wanting to play fetch.
It felt like I was losing her… all to an itch I couldn’t solve.
If you’re seeing the same constant itching, dry skin, dull coat, inflamed paws and the “please help me...make it stop” eyes—this isn’t you being dramatic. It’s a villain almost every dog faces:
Time.
You see, over 90% of a dog’s skin barrier depends on a key protein—the scaffolding that keeps skin strong, hydrated, and itch-free.
But here’s the kicker:
After age 1, dogs make less and less of this vital protein every single year.
When their reserves run low, microscopic cracks form in the skin barrier. Moisture leaks out, irritants sneak in, and the scratching spiral begins.
The worst part? Almost no kibble or modern day dog food contains this protein anymore (high-heat processing destroys it). That means our dogs are running on empty… and we’re left chasing “solutions” that never fix the root cause.
I asked my friend (a vet tech), she confirmed that this is not just an old dog problem. In fact, studies have shown dogs as young as one year old can show signs of skin issues.
To put that into perspective, the average dog lives to about 10 years old, which is only 3650 days...
...some even less depending on the breed...
...and if your dog's skin issues start when they are just one year old...
...that means they only get to enjoy those first 365 days of their life properly...
The rest of their lives might be spent dealing with the discomfort and limitations of constant itching and inflammation.
Just like a bicycle that gets left outside and not taken care of properly...
It soon starts to rust.
At first, this is annoying because it's creaky and not performing its best. However, very quickly it spreads to every part of the bike until it can no longer move.
It doesn't matter how new or old the bike is...
If you don't take care of it...
...it will wither away.
